Onnit 6 BodyWeight Program Review

A year ago, I reviewed the Onnit 6 kettlebell program and that’s been my most popular review post yet. Naturally, I decided to review the Body Weight program in hopes it’ll reach and help others make a decision during their online, at-home workout research.

In case you’re wondering: Yes, I found this program to be more difficult than the kettlebell program! And so did many others I heard from on the facebook group! Don’t let the idea of just using bodyweight fool you! The movements in this program are designed to have you move in ways you most likely don’t day to day, so you’ll be challenged from day 1.

I split this review into four parts:

  • The Program
  • Instructions
  • Value
  • Experience

The Program

This is probably the most exciting part of getting my hands on a new program because it’s an opportunity for me to explore and play with new movements, which generally means a chance to build muscle and pass any plateaus I’m hitting. Like boredom!!

This program is setup much like the other Onnit 6 programs; that is that there are 3 days of hard work per week, 2 days of Yoga, and 1 day of rest. Each day of hard work (Prime the Pump, Blasted by the Basics, and Speed Kills) has 3 videos, a warmup, the workout of the day, and a cool down. These videos are arranged differently each week to introduce some variability and CHANGE AFTER THE FIRST 3 WEEKS. That’s right! The exercises in weeks 4-6 are different from those in 1-3. It’s like two programs for the price of one!

Each exercise has 3 tiers of technical levels, from beginner to advanced. I really appreciated this detail because it allowed me to run through the program a couple time without getting bored. I found the beginner tier to be difficult enough, despite spending years lifting and just having done the kettlebell program twice.

Instructions

There are very easy to follow, step-by-step instructions every part of the way. Each movement has dedicated videos that breakdown the technical details and coach what to look out for. Every exercise video, except yoga, is led by Onnit’s Chief Fitness Officer John Wolf. He has an expansive fitness knowledge, he’s built to back it up, and has a likeable personality that makes being coached by his videos a breeze.

Other members in the videos include Onnit staff from around the country that participate in the 3 tier exercises, going through the entire program with you each step of the way. You’ll see them grimace and sweat through the workouts with you.

Value

I think this program is worth every penny with 6 weeks of content. I did this twice in a row, back to back. That’s 3 MONTHS of workouts! The program is regularly priced at a relatively affordable $50, but I’ve seen the program go on sale from time to time for 50% off. I liked this program so much, I’d buy it again too. But I can’t, so I bought the barbell program instead, which I’ll start once I create space in my garage…

Experience

Loved it. Absolutely loved it. The videos are super easy to follow and fun enough stay engaged with. I love that I can pause and un-pause the videos whenever and, since they’re online, I can take the videos wherever I want. The videos are professionally shot with quality equipment, which is much more than I can say for a lot of online programs out there. Though these things may not be as important to experienced fitness gurus, they will be for the medium to lesser experienced fitness folks, just because they make the program that much easier to follow and stick with.

There’s an online Facebook community that provides tons of support and information whenever you need it. Back in the early days of covid, many people on here were helping others find a acquire equipment for home gym. I don’t participate in the group often these days, but I do find it inspiring to see it’s members posting about growth and excitement around Onnit’s programs.

There’s always room for improvement so I’ll explain my biggest pain point with this program; That is the lack of a mobile application. This obviously didn’t change how the program worked for me in terms of exercises and health, but not having a mobile application made it ever so slightly more difficult to get online, log in, and start. I admit this is also on me, I forget my passwords all the time and fail to keep password managers up to date, but I know I’m not the only person like this and who would prefer a dedicated app.

5/5 would recommend!!
